What is Loudspeaker Enclosure?
When a loudspeaker is mounted in a closed box with an opening in the front (to enable the cone to transmit its vibrations to the air in front), the box serves the purpose of an infinite baffle because the waves from the back of the cone will not be able to come to the front side. Such a closed box is called an Loudspeaker Enclosure, and is shown in Fig. Column speakers are mounted in such a closed box.
The optimum enclosure material is 28-mm plywood or particle board. Solid timber is not recommended because its grain can induce resonance at frequencies within the useful audio frequency range. The package must be airtight. All connections should be cemented, and all terminals or cables on the rear panel should be carefully sealed. The hole for the loudspeaker’s cone should be precisely cut, and a good adhesive should be used around the speaker’s edge to ensure great sealing and prevent air leakage.
There is no inactivity because the air in the box does not move. However, compliance exists because the vibrating cone’s pressure on the air inside the enclosure generates a pressure change in the cabinet.
Features of Enclosure of Loudspeaker
Below we listed some important features of Enclosure of Loudspeaker –
- Enclosures keep sound waves from interacting with one another, minimizing distortion and increasing clarity.
- Enclosures are meant to reduce vibrations and resonances, which can alter the sound produced by the speaker.
- Properly constructed enclosures can improve bass response by managing airflow and speaker excursion.
- Enclosures protect speaker components from external factors including dust, moisture, and physical damage, extending their life.
- Enclosures help to direct sound waves in a certain direction, enhancing sound concentration and projection.
