What is L293D Motor Driver IC ?
It is a popular and versatile motor driver IC capable of driving two DC motors or a single stepper motor. It consists of two H-bridge circuits, allowing independent control of two DC motors or one stepper motor. Each H-bridge can drive a motor in both directions (clockwise and counter-clockwise) and control its speed. Typically operates in a wide voltage range (4.5V to 36V) suitable for a variety of motors. It can handle peak currents of up to 600mA and continuous currents of up to 300mA per channel.
🏷️ Pin Diagram of L293D
- PIN1, PIN9: Enable pins for motor 1 and motor 2 (can be used to enable or disable the outputs).
- PIN2, PIN7, PIN10, PIN15: Input pins to control the direction of motors.
- PIN3, PIN6, PIN11, PIN14: Output pins connected to the motors. As shown in the circuit diagram ( Below ).
- PIN4, PIN5, PIN12, PIN13: Ground pins. These pins have to connected with the negative terminal of the supply voltage.
- PIN8, PIN16: VCC pins for the IC (usually connected to the power supply). PIN8 for Motor Supply and PIN16 for IC Supply.
🏷️ Advantages
These are the advantages of this motor driver IC –
- Allows control of two motors independently in terms of direction and speed.
- Provides protection against back EMF (electromotive force) generated by the motor.

🏷️ Circuit Diagram
Below is the circuit diagram that how to control the dc motor with this motor driver IC. A 5V and 12V power supply is connected with the pins 16 and 8. PIN 16 is the IC supply and PIN 8 is the motor supply. If you connect a 12V motor then you have to supply 12V DC to the PIN 8. Four digital states are connected with the INPUT pins of IC ( IN1, IN2, IN3, and IN4 ) and two motors are connected with OUTPUT pins ( OUT1, OUT2, OUT3, and OUT4 ).
This has four GROUND PINS. These ground pins are connected to the negative terminal of the power supply. The enable pins are also connected with the 5V supply to enable INPUTs of this IC. If we do not supply those ENABLE PINS ( EN1 and EN2 ), the motor can not work at any cost. So, we have to supply voltage to those PINS.
🏷️ How does it works
Below we attached a table where we describe how and in what direction the motor rotates depending on the input supply of the INPUT PINs of the IC. Also we link a video at the last of this article, by seen this video you can easily understand how motor driver IC works.
INPUT PINS SUPPLY | Motor Direction |
---|---|
1. When IN1 = 1 and IN2 = 0 | Clockwise ( Motor 1 ) |
2. When IN1 = 0 and IN2 = 1 | Anti-Clockwise ( Motor 1 ) |
3. When IN3 = 1 and IN4 = 0 | Clockwise ( Motor 2 ) |
4. When IN3 = 0 and IN4 = 1 | Anti-Clockwise ( Motor 2 ) |
I don’t think the title of your article matches the content lol. Just kidding, mainly because I had some doubts after reading the article.
