What is Online UPS?
In industrial electronics, an Online UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) is a type of power protection system designed to provide a continuous and stable power supply to critical equipment and processes. Unlike other UPS types, such as line-interactive or offline UPS, an online UPS constantly regulates the incoming power and ensures that the connected devices receive a consistent and reliable power source at all times.

Working Principle of Online UPS
- When the main supply is present, the rectifier or charger provides power to an inverter as well as battery. The battery is charged. The inverter is ON and feeds power to the load through UPS static switch.
- The UPS static switch is always ON and connect load to the inverter output.
- The main static switch is always off. But when the UPS fails to feed the power, then the load is connected directly to the mains through the main static switch.
- When the main supply is not available, then the battery bank supplies power to an inverter. Thus, an inverter is always ON and it takes the power from rectifier or battery.
Specifications of Online UPS
- Power Rating: 500 VA to 50kVA.
- Output Voltage: 230V, 0.1%.
- Backup time: 30 min to 4 hr.
- Power Factor: More than 0.8 (Lagging).
- Efficiency: Greater than 85%
- Input Voltage: 230V, 15%.
- Output Frequency: 50 Hz
- Harmonic Distortion: Less then 3%
Advantages of Online UPS
- It provides isolation between main supply and load.
- Voltage regulation is better.
- Transfer time is practically zero.
Disadvantages of Online UPS
- It is very costlier than others.
- Overall efficiency is not good.
Applications of Online UPS
- Used is induction motor drives.
- Also used in medical equipment etc.
Conclusion
