Different Steps of Petroleum Refining Processes

Once dirt, water, and natural gas are removed, crude oil undergoes distillation to separate it into different fractions. These fractions are then purified using straightforward methods to produce various petroleum products. This entire process is known as the refining of petroleum.

  1. Water removal: Crude oil often exists as a stable emulsion containing oil and saltwater. The water is removed by passing this emulsion through an electrostatic precipitator, which separates the colloidal water from the oil.
  2. Elimination of harmful impurities: Salts such as NaCl, MgCl₂, and sulfur compounds can damage refining equipment through corrosion. Chloride salts are removed by washing the crude oil with water, while sulfur compounds are eliminated by treating them with CuO. The resulting CuS is then separated through filtration.
  3. Fractional distillation: Crude oil is heated to approximately 400°C in an iron retort, causing all volatile components to evaporate. These components are separated in a tall stainless steel tower, a fractionating column. In the column, fractions with higher boiling points condense at the lower levels, while those with lower boiling points condense at higher levels. The fractional condensation occurs at different heights within the column, as illustrated in Figure.

Petroleum refining processes are critical in turning crude oil into valuable items used in modern life. These processes, which include distillation, cracking, reforming, and treatment, enable the manufacture of fuels such as gasoline, diesel, and aviation fuel, as well as raw materials for a range of industries. Without petroleum refining processes, it would be impossible to meet the world’s energy and industrial product demands efficiently.
