What is Abnormal Conditions?
Abnormal conditions in switchgear and protection systems in electrical engineering are those in which the operating characteristics of electrical equipment and systems depart from their usual state. These deviations suggest potential flaws or risks that may jeopardize the electrical network’s safety, reliability, and performance.
Abnormal conditions include a variety of scenarios, including:
- Excessive current flowing through conductors or equipment above their rated capability.
- A direct connection between conductors with low impedance produces a fast rise in current flow.
- Leakage of current to the earth as a result of contact with grounded surfaces or insulation failure.
- Unexpected deviations from accepted bounds in voltage levels, such as sags (decreases) or swells (increases).
- Abnormal heating or cooling of electrical parts, which could be a sign of problems or inefficiency.
