What is Baffle in Loudspeaker?
A baffle in a loudspeaker system is a structure or surface that the speaker drivers are affixed on. It has a significant impact on the sound production and overall functioning of the speaker.
Types of Baffle
There are four types of baffle in loudspeaker –
- Finite baffle
- Infinite baffle
- Enclosure
- Bass- reflex baffle
What is Finite Baffle?
The wooden cabinets seen in radio receivers and television receivers serve as finite baffles. Because of their finite size, such baffles are ineffective and cause some loss of low audio frequency frequencies due to diffraction.
What is Infinite Baffle?
An ideal infinite baffle is one with infinite lateral dimensions. Such a baffle will not be feasible. However, if the dimensions of the baffle are so vast that the frequency at which the path length is λ⁄2, is far lower than the lowest frequency to be used, such a baffle is referred to as an endless baffle. Consider mounting a speaker in a hole in the wall of a hall. The wall’s vast size will act as a natural barrier for the back sound to reach the speaker. The wall will function as an infinite baffle.
A practical infinite baffle will have a large dimension. Several designs have been created to lower the size. One such design involves bending the baffle back at the edges, as seen in the above Fig.
