Electrical Drive | Block Diagram | Parts | Advantages | Uses [2023]

In this article, we discuss What is the electrical drive? Its block diagram, parts, and benefits also. Poly Notes Hub shares these notes with the diploma engineering students.

What is Electrical Drive?

It is a type of system used to control an electrical machine’s motion. In other words, we can say, that the drive that is used by the electric motor is called the electrical drive. The electrical drive uses any prime movers like diesel or petrol engines, steam engines, hydraulic motors, etc. The prime movers supply the mechanical energy to the drive for motion control.

Parts of Electrical Drive

The main and fundamentals parts are given below

Power Modulator

The requirement of power modular is to regulate the output power of the source. The power modulator controls the power from the source of the motor in such a way that the motor transmits the speed vs torque characteristics by the load. It also converts the energy according to the requirement of the motor which is used.

For Example: If the source is DC and we are using induction motor then the power modulator converts the DC source to AC source.

Control Unit

This section is used to control and operate the power modulator at the small voltage and power level. It also generates the commands which are used to protect the power modulator and motor.

Sensing Unit

This unit senses certain drive parameters like motor current and speed.

Advantages

These are some advantages of the system

  • These are independent from pollution
  • The efficiency also high
  • They can be easily started
  • They has very large range of torque, speed and power.

Disadvantages

These are some disadvantages of the system

  • These are cause noise pollution
  • The initial cost is high
  • They have poor dynamic response.

Application

Below are some applications of the electrical drive system

  • Used in Transportation system
  • Used is rolling mills
  • Used in textile mills
