What is Electrical Isolator?
Electrical isolators are devices used in electrical circuits to provide the safe separation of a segment of the circuit from the power source. They are also referred to as disconnect switches or isolating switches. Their principal uses are in testing, maintenance, and repair.
An isolator is made out of a switch mechanism that may be turned on or off manually to cut the circuit. When the isolator is open, it effectively isolates the portion of the circuit that is linked to it by stopping the passage of electrical current. This keeps workers on the circuit from receiving electrical shocks or accidentally turning on equipment.
Working Principle of Electrical Isolators
These isolators operate on the basis of their capacity to physically cut off a portion of an electrical circuit from the power supply. A manually or remotely operated switch mechanism is used to do this. The contacts of the isolator are engaged while it is in the closed position, permitting current to pass through the circuit. On the other hand, the contacts are split apart and the current flow is stopped when the isolator is open. By avoiding unintentional equipment energization and reducing the possibility of electric shocks, this isolation guarantees the safety of people and equipment during maintenance, repair, or testing activities.
