How to do Coal Selection for Power Generation?
There are several factors by which we can select a proper type of coal for power generations, those factors are –
- Calorific Value: High calorific value coal generates more energy per unit, making it good for power generation.
- Sulfur Content: Low sulfur concentration reduces SO₂ emissions and reduces acid rain.
- Moisture Content: Lower moisture level is recommended since higher moisture content affects coal’s energy efficiency.
- Ash Content: Low ash level is preferable since high ash content can result in increased residue and disposal concerns, as well as reduced combustion efficiency.
- Fixed Carbon: High fixed carbon concentration indicates higher energy content and more efficient combustion.
- Technological Compatibility: The coal must be suitable for the power plant technology (e.g., pulverized coal combustion, fluidized bed combustion).
- Economic Considerations: The cost of coal, transportation logistics, and availability are all important considerations in the choosing process.
