What is Earth Tester?

An earth tester is an instrument that measures the earth resistance of grounding systems. It guarantees that electrical installations are properly grounded, hence protecting against electrical risks.

Working Principle of Earth Tester

The earth tester operates on the premise of measuring resistance by running a known current through the earth and observing the voltage drop. The basic components in an earth tester are:

  • Generator: It is provides stable power supply.
  • Potential Coil: It is used to measures the voltage drop.
  • Current Coil: It is used to measures the current of the circuit that is flowing through it.

The earth tester generates a known current that is transferred between the earth electrode being tested and a remote electrode. The voltage drop is then measured to calculate the resistance using Ohm’s Law (R = V/I).

The connection diagram of Earth Tester is includes:

  • Earth Electrode or E1: It is the grounding electrode that is being used to measure resistance.
  • Current Probe or C1: It is placed in the earth or ground at a specific separation from the earth electrode.
  • Potential Probe or P1: It is installed to monitor the potential drop between the current probe and the earth electrode.

Applications of Earth Tester

Here are the uses of the Earth Tester or Earth Resistance Tester –

  • It is used to avoid shock dangers and ensure correct grounding in buildings, industries, and electrical installations.
  • It checks the grounding of electrical systems, transformers, and substations for safety.
  • It measures grounding resistance to ensure that lightning surges are effectively dissipated.
  • It provides grounding, which protects sensitive electronics from lightning and fault current.
  • It ensures the grounding of machinery and equipment, particularly in dangerous areas.
