Construction of ELCB

- Core: The core of an ELCB typically consists of a toroidal or ring-shaped magnetic core made of ferromagnetic material such as iron or steel. The conductors or wires of the electrical circuit pass through the central opening of the core. The core serves as the foundation for the sensing circuit and tripping mechanism.
- Sensing Circuit: It has a sensing circuit that continuously monitors the current flowing through the live and neutral conductors. The sensing circuit of this device detects any imbalance between the incoming and outgoing currents in the electrical circuit. It usually consists of a differential current transformer (CT) wound around the core. The CT generates a secondary current proportional to the difference between the currents entering and leaving the circuit. This secondary current is then fed into the tripping mechanism for further processing.
- Tripping Mechanism: The tripping mechanism is responsible for disconnecting the electrical circuit when a fault is detected. It typically includes a solenoid coil connected to the secondary winding of the CT. When an imbalance or leakage current is detected by the sensing circuit, the secondary current induces a magnetic field in the solenoid coil. This magnetic field activates a mechanical mechanism, such as a latch or plunger, which causes the ELCB to trip and disconnect the circuit from the power supply. Some ELCBs may also include additional features such as manual reset buttons or indicators to signify when a trip has occurred.
Working Principle of ELCB
This device operates on the principle of detecting an imbalance in the current between the live and neutral conductors. If the current going to the load differs from the current returning, it indicates a leakage, such as an electric shock to a person or a current leakage to the ground. It quickly interrupts the circuit to prevent such dangers.
