About Vertical Break Isolators or VBI – Construction, Characteristics, and Applications | New Topic [2024]

In this note, we are going to talk about Vertical Break Isolators or VBIs. And About its Construction, Characteristics, and Applications. Welcome to Poly Notes Hub, a leading destination for Polytechnic Notes for Diploma Engineering Students.

Author Name: Arun Paul.

What is Vertical Break Isolator?

A Vertical Break Isolators (VBIs) is a type of electrical switch that is widely employed in high-voltage power systems. It is intended to isolate elements of a power system during maintenance or repair operations. The term “vertical break” refers to how the switch’s contacts are opened and closed. Unlike some other types of switches, the contacts of a VBI move vertically, which might be useful in some applications.

A VBI’s principal function is to provide a visible break in the electrical circuit, allowing personnel to safely maintain or repair equipment downstream of the switch. They are a vital part of electrical safety systems, helping to prevent accidents and injuries while working on high-voltage equipment.

Construction of Vertical Break Isolator

Below, we shows the construction and important parts of VBIs or Vertical Break Isolators –

Construction of Vertical Break Isolators - poly notes hub
  1. Frame and Mounting Structure: The VBI is normally installed on a strong frame or structure that can hold its weight and endure mechanical forces during operation.
  2. Insulating Support Structures: The VBI contains insulating support structures composed of porcelain, glass, or composite materials. These structures provide mechanical support for the conducting parts while prohibiting electrical conduction between them.
  3. Conducting Elements: The conducting elements of the VBI are usually built of high-quality conductive materials like copper or aluminum. When the switch is closed, these parts provide a conduit for electrical current to pass.
  4. Contacts: The contacts are the components of the VBI that establish and terminate electrical connections. In a vertical break design, the contacts move vertically to open and close the circuit. They are frequently constructed of materials that can tolerate large currents and repeated use without significant wear.
  5. Operating Mechanism: The VBI features an operational mechanism that allows the contacts to be opened and closed. This mechanism can be manual, with the operator physically moving the contacts, or motorized for remote or automated operation.

Characteristics of Vertical Break Isolator

Below we listed some important characteristics of Vertical Break Isolators (VBIs) –

  1. The design provides efficient isolation of electrical components when the switch is open.
  2. They can securely interrupt and isolate high-voltage electrical circuits.
  3. This ensures consistent performance and lifespan in a variety of operating environments.
  4. Many VBIs are placed in weatherproof enclosures to keep internal components safe from environmental elements like moisture, dust, and temperature variations.
  5. These are designed and produced to meet industry standards and regulations, ensuring their safety.

Applications of Vertical Break Isolator

Used in Power Substations, High Voltage Transmission Lines, Renewable Energy Systems, and in mining operations to isolate electrical equipment etc.
