Over Voltage Causes
Below we listed some causes of over voltages –
- Lightning Strikes: Lightning strikes near power lines or utility equipment can cause a sudden increase in voltage, resulting in over voltages in electrical systems.
- Switching Operations: Switching actions in power systems, such as opening and closing circuit breakers, can result in transient over voltages due to the abrupt change in current flow.
- Faults in Power Lines: Over voltages can be caused by defects such as short circuits or line-to-ground faults, which interrupt the system’s regular voltage level.
- Resonance: Over voltages can be caused by resonance in electrical systems, which occurs when the system’s natural frequency equals that of the voltage that is applied.
- Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): External sources of electromagnetic interference, such as radio frequency interference (RFI) and electromagnetic pulses (EMP), can cause overvoltages in electrical systems.
