definition of electromagnetic spectrum - poly notes hub

Define Electromagnetic Spectrum – UV, Visible, and IR Spectrum | New Note [2024]

In this note, we are going to know a topic called “Define Electromagnetic Spectrum“. Also we will learn about Ultraviolet Spectrum, Visible Spectrum, and IR Spectrum as well. Welcome to Poly Notes Hub, a leading destination for engineering notes for diploma and degree engineering students.

Author Name: Arun Paul.

Define Electromagnetic Spectrum

The Electromagnetic Spectrum includes all sorts of electromagnetic radiation. The spectrum is divided into three parts based on wavelength and frequency: ultraviolet (UV), visible light, and infrared.

Electromagnetic radiation is defined as waves of the electromagnetic field that propagate through space and carry electromagnetic radiant energy. It covers a broad variety of wavelengths and frequencies.

Different Electromagnetic Spectrums

Here are the three parts of electromagnetic spectrum wavelength and frequency table –

NameWavelengthFrequencyCharacteristics
1. Ultraviolet Spectrum10 nm to 400 nm7.5 x 10¹⁴ Hz to 3 x 10¹⁶ Hz1. Beyond the violet end of the visible spectrum.
2. Invisible to the human eye.
3. Can cause sunburn and has sterilizing properties.
2. Visible Spectrum400 nm to 700 nm4.3 x 10¹⁴ Hz to 7.5 x 10¹⁴ Hz1. The portion of the electromagnetic spectrum that is visible to the human eye.
2. Colors range from violet (shorter wavelength) to red (longer wavelength).
3. Essential for vision in humans and many animals.
3. Infrared Spectrum700 nm to 1 mm3 x 10¹¹ Hz to 4.3 x 10¹⁴ Hz1. Beyond the red end of the visible spectrum.
2. Invisible to the human eye but can be felt as heat.
3. Used in night-vision equipment, remote controls, and thermal imaging.
