Staircase wiring is a wiring technique that allows you to control one light from two distinct locations. It is widely used in staircases, lengthy corridors, bedrooms (two-door rooms), and hallways when a user has to turn on or off the same light from two different locations.

Purpose of this Wiring in Staircase Lighting

• To operate a lamp from two switches placed at two different positions.
• Provides convenience and safety, especially in staircases where switching the light from either floor is necessary.

Components used in Staircase Wiring Diagram

Working Principle

• The two 2-way switches are connected in such a way that changing the position of any one switch will either complete or break the circuit and thus turn the lamp ON or OFF.
• The switches create a path for current through traveler wires. When the path is complete, the lamp glows.

How the Circuit Works

• Each switch has one common terminal (C) and two L1 and L2 terminals.
• The phase wire is connected to the common terminal of the first switch.
• The two traveler wires connect the L1 of switch 1 → L1 of switch 2 and L2 of switch 1 → L2 of switch 2.
• The common terminal of switch 2 goes to the lamp.
• The other lamp terminal is connected to neutral.
• When both switches are in the same position, the circuit completes → Light ON.
• When the switches are in opposite positions, the circuit breaks → Light OFF.
