The principle of incandescence is founded on the idea that materials release light when heated to a high temperature.
These are some process to light up by heat in the incandescent lamp –
- Heat & Temperature: When a material is heated to a high temperature, its atoms and molecules gather energy and begin to vibrate more rapidly.
- Emission of Light: At sufficiently high temperatures, the energy levels of vibrating atoms and molecules rise to the point where they generate electromagnetic radiation in the form of light. The hotter the material, the more intense the light it emits, with the hue shifting from red (lower temperatures) to white or blue (higher temperatures).
- Incandescence Color: The hue of the emitted light is determined by the material’s temperature. At lower temperatures, the light is reddish (similar to the glow of a stove burning), but as the temperature rises, the light turns yellow, then white, and finally blue.
- Application: Traditional incandescent light bulbs work on the principle of incandescence, which occurs when an electric current heats a tungsten filament to a high temperature, allowing it to emit visible light.
