What is Computer Network?

A Computer Network consists of networked devices that share resources and communicate with one another. These networks can be as simple as two computers sharing files, or as complicated as the internet, which connects millions of devices around the world. Modern computing relies heavily on computer networks for data sharing, communication, and resource management.

Components of Computer Network
  • Nodes, like Computer Drives or Networking Devices.
  • Transmission Media, like Twisted Pair Cable and Coaxial Cable.
  • Network Interface Card or NIC.
  • Switches.
  • Routers.
  • Access Points.
  • Cables or Connectors.
  • Network Operating System.

Types of Computer Network

There are 5 types of computer network –
  1. Local Area Network or LAN: A network covering a small geographical region, such as a single building or school.
  2. Wide Area Network or WAN: A network that spans a broad geographical area, typically a country or continent. The internet is the largest wide-area network (WAN).
  3. Metropolitan Area Network or MAN: A network that covers a city or a huge campus.
  4. Personal Area Network or PAN: Bluetooth connections are examples of personal device networks that are often limited to a few meters in range.
  5. Virtual Area Network or VAN: A secure, encrypted internet connection through which remote users can access a private network.
