What is DC Motor?

A DC (Direct Current) Motor is an electrical device that converts direct current electricity into mechanical energy. It works on the principles of electromagnetic and is widely utilized in a variety of applications because to its simplicity, dependability, and efficiency.

Types of DC Motor

There are two types of DC Motor –

  1. Brushed DC Motor
    • Series DC Motor: The field windings are connected in series with the armature windings. High starting torque, however speed varies according to load.
    • Shunt DC Motor: The field windings are connected in parallel to the armature windings. Good speed regulation, poor starting torque.
    • Compound DC Motor: A combination of series and shunt windings. Both series and shunt motors exhibit balanced properties.
  2. Brushless DC Motor: Electronic commutation replaces brushes and a commutator. Compared to brushed motors, they are more efficient, reliable, and long-lasting.

DC Motor Working

The DC motor is based on the Lorentz force principle, which asserts that a current-carrying conductor in a magnetic field experiences a force. When current runs through the armature winding, it creates a magnetic field around the conductor. This field interacts with the stator’s magnetic field, generating a force that turns the rotor.

Applications of DC Motor

  • Used in Electric Vehicles, Fans, Blowers, Cranes, Elevators, Lifts etc
