Merits and Demerits of Gas Turbine Power Plant

Merits of Gas Turbine Power Plant

Here we have listed some merits of this power plant –

  1. Gas turbine power facilities are highly thermally efficient, particularly in combined cycle systems.
  2. They can quickly start and achieve full power output, making them excellent for peak load operations and emergency power supplies.
  3. Gas turbines are smaller and lighter than other forms of power plants, making them easy to transport and install.
  4. When using natural gas, gas turbines emit fewer pollutants and greenhouse gases than coal-fired power plants.
  5. They can run on a variety of fuels, including natural gas, diesel, and even biofuels, offering greater operational flexibility.

Demerits of Gas Turbine Power Plant

Here we have listed some demerits of this power plant –

  1. Natural gas or other fuels might be expensive, reducing the total cost-effectiveness of the power plant.
  2. Gas turbines are less efficient at partial load than at full load.
  3. Gas turbines can be noisy when operating, necessitating soundproofing in densely inhabited regions.
  4. The quality of the fuel used can have a considerable impact on gas turbine performance and lifespan, hence high-quality, clean fuels are required for optimal operation.
  5. While gas turbines have lower overall emissions, they can generate large volumes of nitrogen oxides (NOx), which contribute to air pollution and smog formation.
