Superhetrodyne Receiver

During World War I, Major Edwin H. Armstrong invented the superhetrodyne receiver, which addressed the deficiencies of straight radio receivers. Currently, all modern receivers use the superhetrodyne circuit. This type of radio receiver converts the selected radio frequency to a fixed lower value known as intermediate frequency (IF). This is accomplished using a specialized electronic circuit known as the mixing circuit. There is a local oscillator in the radio receiver. This oscillator generates high-frequency vibrations. The mixer circuit mixes the selected radio frequency with the high frequency waves. Beats are formed during this process, and the mixer generates a frequency equal to the difference between the local oscillator and the radio wave frequency.

As discussed later, the circuit is built so that the oscillator always produces a frequency 455 kHz higher than the chosen radio frequency. As a result, no matter what station the receiver is tuned to, the mixer will always create an intermediate frequency of 455 kHz. For example, if the 600 kHz station is tuned, the local oscillator will generate a frequency of 1055 kHz. As a result, the mixer’s output frequency will be 455 kHz. Figure depicts the superhetrodyne principle as a block diagram. The chosen radio frequency f1 is combined with a frequency f2 from a local oscillator. The mixer’s output is a difference that is always 455 kHz, regardless of which station the receiver is tuned to.

The creation of a set intermediate frequency is the distinguishing feature of the superhetrodyne circuit. At this fixed middle frequency, the amplifier circuits function with the highest stability, selectivity, and sensitivity. This circuit is known as a superhetrodyne circuit because it converts incoming radio frequency to intermediate frequency through heterodyning or beating the local oscillator against radio frequency.
