What is Trivector Meter?

A tri-vector meter is an electrical energy meter that measures and records three key characteristics in an electrical network: active power (kWh), reactive power (kVARh), and apparent power (kVAh). These meters are critical in industrial and commercial environments where precise energy monitoring and management are required.

Trivector Meter Working Principle

The trivector meter works by combining three measurement mechanisms for each type of power –

  • Active Power Measurement: In active power measurement (kWh), the meter employs a conventional watt-hour mechanism made up of current and voltage coils that generate a magnetic field. When current runs through the current coil, it generates torque proportionate to active power, resulting in rotation that records the kWh on the meter.
  • Reactive Power Measurement: The meter detects phase angle changes using a special coil arrangement for measuring reactive power (kVARh). The meter determines reactive power by calculating the displacement between current and voltage and recording kVARh. This figure represents the power required to sustain magnetic fields in inductive loads such as motors.
  • Apparent Power Measurement: Apparent power measurement (kVAh) integrates active and reactive power values to calculate overall power consumption. This measurement covers both the power that does useful work (active) and the power that maintains magnetic fields (reactive), providing a complete picture of overall energy consumption.

  • Tri-vector meters are used in large factories, retail malls, and other commercial facilities to properly measure power usage.
  • Because reactive power can cause inefficiencies, tri-vector meters aid in measuring the power factor.
  • Tri-vector meters are critical components of building energy management systems (BEMS), giving data for optimizing load distribution and lowering peak consumption.
