Construction of Well Type Manometer
A Well Type Manometer is made out of a large diameter reservoir (well) coupled to a narrow vertical glass tube. The system is partially filled with a manometric liquid like mercury. The reservoir has a significantly bigger cross-sectional area than the thin tube, thus any change in liquid level in the well is negligible and frequently overlooked. A graded scale runs along the narrow tube to measure the rise and fall of the liquid column. One side of the reservoir is connected to the pressure source, while the thin tube is mostly open to the atmosphere.

Working Principle of Well Type Manometer
The well type manometer operates on the basis of hydrostatic pressure balancing. When pressure is applied to the reservoir, the manometric liquid is forced into the narrow tube, causing the liquid level to rise or fall in the tube. Because the well has a vast area, the change in liquid level is insignificant, and the pressure is estimated solely by measuring the height (h) of the liquid column in the narrow tube. Pressure is determined using:
P = ρgh
Thus, the instrument provides more convenient and accurate reading compared to the U-tube manometer and is mainly used for low pressure measurement.
Typical Range of this Type Manometer
- With Water as Manometric Fluid: 0 to 5 kPa (approx.)
- With Mercury as Manometric Fluid: 0 to 50 kPa (approx.)
- Differential Pressure Measurement: About 5 Pa to 50 kPa
Range of this type manometer ≈ 5 Pa to 50 kPa (depending on manometric fluid).
Advantages of Well Type Manometer
- It is more accurate than U-Type Manometer
- We can easily read the data.
- The design is also compact.
Disadvantages of Well Type Manometer
- It has a limited pressure range.
- The temperature effect on the fluid of the manometer.
Applications of Well Type Manometer
- Used for Industrial pressure measurement.
- Used in Flow measurement systems.
- Used for Gas pressure measurements as well.
